One of the largest freshwater fish is the Arapaima. It can weigh up to 400 pounds and inhabits the Amazon region. The probably best place for fly fishing for large Arapaima is Pirarucú in Brazil.

How do you fish for Arapaima? The flies should be large streamers with a lot of water displacement, around 20-25 cm in length. Personally, I found that the color of the streamers didn't matter much. While Jako and the others caught most fish using black ones, I caught mine with light-colored flies. Most bites came in deep water, so we fished with sinking lines. The fact that we were constantly surrounded by Arapaima heightened our excitement.

In the Mamirauá area, this fish can reach 20 kilograms in its first year of life. Fully grown fish measure about 150 cm in length and weigh between 35 and 40 kilograms. A fish measuring two meters is only about six years old!

The population of Arapaima in Mamiraruá is simply incredible. During the low water months from August to December, fish of various sizes gather in the area. The largest Arapaima recorded by biologists in the reserve was 290 cm in length and weighed 173 kg. The largest fish landed with a fly rod was 249 cm long.

At times, we had to cast a lot. When the bite comes, you suddenly feel the pressure and the pull as if you've hooked onto a tree trunk. In the next moment, everything is in motion, and anything can happen. From extremely fast runs far into the distance, to hard hits on the rod, to jumps out of the water with intense head shaking – anything is possible.

CATCH STATISTICS

The four of us had four very successful days, catching 22 Arapaimas, with seven of them measuring over two meters. Each fish was a new adventure. Vaidas, who was always active with his camera, managed to gather a lot of material for an amazing film. The film was selected by the Rise Film Festival 2022 and has already been on a cinema tour.
