Atlantic salmon fishing in Iceland - I've heard about it time and time again. Many enthusiastically describe the beauty of the landscape and the rivers. If you're looking to catch really large Atlantic salmon, Iceland might not be the best destination. Most rivers have strong grilse runs; during the prime time in July and August, the best Icelandic rivers are teeming with fresh grilse (young salmon). At the beginning of the season, the chance of catching larger salmon is higher. A salmon weighing over 20 pounds is considered substantial and relatively rare in Iceland.
Just back from Kharlovka and still fully immersed in the salmon fever, I'm looking for an opportunity for more days of salmon fishing. On the web, I find a last-minute opening due to a cancellation for a top rod with individual guiding on the Midfjardara River, which I impulsively book.
